Simply slide the gauge across the mouth of the fitting to check that the fitting is suitable for use. Using the gauge in multiple positions will check for roundness.

A slot in the side of the gauge is used for checking for wear.

In both cases a loose fit indicates that a new fitting is required. If the fitting will not fit the gauge, a new fitting is required.
